In cooperation with the DMRE and funding from the Swiss State Secretariat for Economic Affairs (SECO), SAGEN coordinated the installation and retrofit of 123 High Masts of 40m height in Matjhabeng Municipality in the Free State Province. The aim of this Energy Efficiency Streetlighting Retrofit Project was to test innovative technical specifications and realise massive savings (1000W HPS to 400W LED). All these installations were completed in July 2020

In cooperation with the South African Photovoltaic Industry Association (SAPVIA), SAGEN hosted a multi-city roadshow from August-September 2019 in order to promote the PV GreenCard programme for safe and quality solar installations. The aim was also to empower role players in the industry for a more inclusive and sustainable sector. Municipalities who co-hosted the roadshows were the eThekwini Municipality, City of Cape Town, City of Tshwane and Nelson Mandela Bay Metropolitan Municipality.
SAGEN, in collaboration with SUNREF, IFC and Standard Bank hosted a workshop on preparing bankable EE investment project proposals. The workshop was offered in conjunction with the 2019 SAEEC conference and attended by 30 registered conference delegates as well as 30 ESCO representatives who were invited through the ESCO register to attend free of charge. The workshop took place on 12 & 13 November 2019

Together with the South African Local Government Association (SALGA) and the Water Institute of Southern Africa (WISA), SAGEN launched the “Anaerobic Digestion of Municipal Wastewater Sludge” guideline and training programme in June 2019; attended by 32 experts and practitioners representing the broader energy and municipal wastewater industry.

As part of the SALGA-DMRE-GIZ “SSEG Development Support Programme”, in which 41 municipalities responded to the open call for participation; municipalities received training and technical advice to prepare for SSEG and redefine their role in the electricity value chain by adapt their funding and operating models.

SAGEN commissioned Water Group Holdings to develop a practical guideline called "Anaerobic Digestion of Municipal Wastewater Sludge". The guideline demonstrates the relationship between maintenance, design, operation and business processes, and how they should work together to ensure that an anaerobic digester is capable of producing biogas and biosolids of the highest quality. Based on the guideline, three pilot training sessions were supported, where 56 trainees participated.
In cooperation with the DMRE, SAGEN commissioned a pilot project in Nelson Mandela Bay Metropolitan Municipality (NMBM) under the custonship of the Department to simulate the revised National Solar Water Heater Programme (NSWHP) model. Through this project, 200x NSW systems were installed in the Walmer township in July 2018.

Together with the DMRE, SAGEN supported the installation of 200 solar water heaters in Nelson Mandela Bay Metro Municipality in 2018. The objectives of the pilot project was to implement a mini version of the ambitious National Solar Water Heating Programme. Twenty learners were selected to participate in the accredited training for installer aides and received their certification. Three learners found employment immediately after the course. Beneficiary households received training based on the household user manual, outlining basic care and maintenance procedures.
