A Practical Guideline for Energy Efficiency Audits at Waste Water Treatment Plants

The purpose of this guideline is to provide an overview and methodology description of how to perform an energy efficiency audit at a waste water treatment plant. Specific focus is placed on how to execute an audit with its associated calculations and compiling an informed and effective audit report. Two case study audits are also included as examples to the guideline user on how the information in the guideline is applied in practice, as demonstrated at two municipal WWTWs. The guideline serves as the basis for a training course to establish a standardised methodology for conducting energy audits in the WWTW sector, as well as to develop capacity and skills to perform such an audit.  The guide covers the following topics:

  • Understanding of the purpose and focus areas of a WWTW EE Audit ,
  • Understanding of the typical treatment processes’ EE impact,
  • How to approach a WWTW EE Audit,
  • How and where to obtain information,
  • How to process the obtained information,
  • How to go about implementation of the findings,
  • What targets can reasonably be expected.
